Outside Lands – iPhone catch up

14 Aug

This past weekend and the tail end of last week were filled to the brim with some of the best music from all over the world.  I had somewhat of an agenda who I wanted to see at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park this year but also kept some open spaces to wander and catch new music.  I had a lot of friends from SF and coming in from other cities to enjoy the music as well so with all these things on my side, the weekend couldn’t fail 🙂

To kick off the weekend, we went to see Of Monsters and Men at the Academy of Sciences (Nightlife) in Golden Gate Park.  They are this beautiful folk band from Iceland.  This was also Chelsea’s birthday so how nice of them to play a show for her on her birthday with just a few extra guests 😉  Outside Lands ticket holders had the option of purchasing these few tickets a few weeks before the festival.  There were many other shows like this throughout the lead up week and weekend of Outside Lands.

The infamous windmills.  These were located near the middle/back lawn area of the main stage.  We had the idea of having this be our meeting place if we all got separated but the funny thing is so did everybody else.  A lot of interesting things happened here like this girl who decided to climb the post and then got kicked out.

One of my absolute favorite local bands, Geographer, played Saturday on the Twin Peaks stage.  They sounded amazing as usual and the lead singer crowd surfed at the end, it was awesome (see photo below).

This is a great sign.

The Magic Crystal is where you could go to see well known comedians perform.  This was a cool feature to add to a music festival!  Although, it has a capacity and you had to wait in long lines to hopefully get in.

They had artist painting huge murals throughout the festival.

Here’s Bloc Party.  There were a lot of interesting lights for the later shows.

Once the fog would roll in in the evenings, you could see lights and lasers everywhere!

Skrillex.

Lots of lights coming out of Skrillex’s space ship to close the festival out on Sunday night.

My personal favorite?  Foo Fighters.  I don’t have enough good things to say about their set.  I remember listening to their old albums in middle school and high school which they ended up playing one of my favorite songs “Aurora” from an old album.

Some other highlights – Beck played an awesome set and brought out all of his hit songs.  The headliners included Neil Young, Stevie Wonder and Metallica.  Metallica had a crazy fire show with pyrotechnics popping everywhere.  There were music varieties of all kinds playing all weekend long.  Over 65,000 people showed up to sell out the festival.  Fashion is huge at the festival.  It was so fun to see everyone’s festival attire.  There were local restaurants that vended their delicious eats which is such an awesome feature because if you found something you really liked, you could now visit their location in SF.  It was a huge success and I enjoyed it immensely with all of my friends.  Now to power through this week so I can relax on a houseboat next weekend.  We planned this so we’d have scheduled down time after a long weekend of standing, walking and dancing.  I hope everyone had a great weekend and Outside Lands if you were one of the 65,000 🙂

Want you to see everything, want you to see all of the lights

29 Mar

For this travel Thursday I thought I would show my photos from Times Square in New York from about a month ago.  I wanted to share these in my week of New York photos but I had so many that I thought I’d save them for another day which happens to be today 🙂  What I had imagined Times Square to be was actually 20x’s bigger in real life.  It was a place that I’m glad that I saw in NY but if I went back, I’d probably focus my time elsewhere.  It was a gigantic sight to see and had so many moving parts that were almost too mentally stimulating.  I left feeling a bit exhausted but now I’m glad I can say I went to NYC and stood in the busiest area and just soaked it all in.  Anyway, here are my photos from the vastly covered in lights area.

A recruiting station right in the middle of the area.

Tall and skinny in this perspective.

The mecca of Forever21’s!!  I did not go in but it’s definitely larger than life.

Walking up the big red steps in the middle of it all.

One of my favorite shows, New Girl!  Chelsea would appreciate this 🙂

Broadway.

The Chase building was showing clips of Ken Block and The Art of Flight.  It was cool to see some action sports being broadcast in such a highly populated area!

And of course, some horses 🙂

What a week it’s been!  One of our morning shows (Alice’s Sarah, Vinnie, Uzette and Icky) won $13,000 through the lottery and the band Fun. stopped by the office yesterday to hang before their shows in SF.  Beyond that, I’ve spent time with great friends and the horses.  It’s been a week where I’ve been able to reflect on the fact that my life is good.  When you truly start doing the things in life that make you happy and you work hard at your commitments, life really falls into place.

Music Monday

5 Dec

I have some “obsessed with” songs of the moment and thought I’d share them because they are too good to not share with other music lovers 🙂

I’m so in love with “No Way” by the Naked and Famous I should be given a fine for playing it on repeat 🙂

Ahh and Ellie Goulding… love her.  While I was in Hawaii she came and did a small set at my work to showcase her new album and I am sad that I missed it!  I guess I’ve been in a electro-pop mood lately but these songs are wonderful.

The 80s are back with this new Chairlift single and I’m digging it.

Happy Monday and enjoy!

Bon Iver = Mi Amor

22 Sep

The good thing about living in such a largely populated area filled with music lovers is that if you want to see a band and they are touring, they will come to San Francisco or the areas very nearby.  Tonight one of my most cherished, Bon Iver, is coming to the Greek Theatre which is one of the most amazing venues in the area.

I shot this photo of Band of Horses at the Greek Theater.  This is another one of my cherished bands.

The lay out is stadium style seating in the Berkeley hills with the most incredible sound balance.  I also personally LOVE their lighting.  They have the most beautiful colors and timing.  Now it sounds like I’ve gotten all hoodoo voodoo on you but it’s definitely cool to see!

Bon Iver is slow soothing music.  You have to be in the mood for calming music to listen to their whole album but I listen to their latest album at work all the time.  I unfortunately won’t be able to make tonight’s Bon Iver show but thought I’d leave you with my favorite song of theirs just so I can pretend like I’m there tonight : )
