Outside Lands – iPhone catch up

14 Aug

This past weekend and the tail end of last week were filled to the brim with some of the best music from all over the world.  I had somewhat of an agenda who I wanted to see at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park this year but also kept some open spaces to wander and catch new music.  I had a lot of friends from SF and coming in from other cities to enjoy the music as well so with all these things on my side, the weekend couldn’t fail 🙂

To kick off the weekend, we went to see Of Monsters and Men at the Academy of Sciences (Nightlife) in Golden Gate Park.  They are this beautiful folk band from Iceland.  This was also Chelsea’s birthday so how nice of them to play a show for her on her birthday with just a few extra guests 😉  Outside Lands ticket holders had the option of purchasing these few tickets a few weeks before the festival.  There were many other shows like this throughout the lead up week and weekend of Outside Lands.

The infamous windmills.  These were located near the middle/back lawn area of the main stage.  We had the idea of having this be our meeting place if we all got separated but the funny thing is so did everybody else.  A lot of interesting things happened here like this girl who decided to climb the post and then got kicked out.

One of my absolute favorite local bands, Geographer, played Saturday on the Twin Peaks stage.  They sounded amazing as usual and the lead singer crowd surfed at the end, it was awesome (see photo below).

This is a great sign.

The Magic Crystal is where you could go to see well known comedians perform.  This was a cool feature to add to a music festival!  Although, it has a capacity and you had to wait in long lines to hopefully get in.

They had artist painting huge murals throughout the festival.

Here’s Bloc Party.  There were a lot of interesting lights for the later shows.

Once the fog would roll in in the evenings, you could see lights and lasers everywhere!

Skrillex.

Lots of lights coming out of Skrillex’s space ship to close the festival out on Sunday night.

My personal favorite?  Foo Fighters.  I don’t have enough good things to say about their set.  I remember listening to their old albums in middle school and high school which they ended up playing one of my favorite songs “Aurora” from an old album.

Some other highlights – Beck played an awesome set and brought out all of his hit songs.  The headliners included Neil Young, Stevie Wonder and Metallica.  Metallica had a crazy fire show with pyrotechnics popping everywhere.  There were music varieties of all kinds playing all weekend long.  Over 65,000 people showed up to sell out the festival.  Fashion is huge at the festival.  It was so fun to see everyone’s festival attire.  There were local restaurants that vended their delicious eats which is such an awesome feature because if you found something you really liked, you could now visit their location in SF.  It was a huge success and I enjoyed it immensely with all of my friends.  Now to power through this week so I can relax on a houseboat next weekend.  We planned this so we’d have scheduled down time after a long weekend of standing, walking and dancing.  I hope everyone had a great weekend and Outside Lands if you were one of the 65,000 🙂

Lean into it – Moto GP at Laguna Seca

2 Aug

This past weekend in Monterey was one of the largest motorcycle races of the year, the Moto Grand Prix.  Some friends invited to me to come down and hang out, so of course you know I would not be missing hang time with some of my good friends and something thrilling.  I have to say, this was extremely exciting to be watching in person.  The bikes move so fast and the riders are practically half way off their bikes the entire time.  It’s hard to catch the detail when they are moving so fast but we cruised around to all different parts of the track to really experience the event.

First things first.

People were scattered all around the 2+ mile track.

With Lacey and Shannon watching the bikes zoom around in record time.

The world famous corkscrew!  This is also one of the most dangerous parts of the track.

The riders tilt their motorcycles sideways practically.

Close grid of racers.  You can see here how they lean to get through the top curve of the corkscrew.

Bottom curve of the corkscrew.

Knee to the ground.

Helicopters were constantly circling the track trying to keep up with the motorcycles.

This gives you a little more perspective.

Spectators.  They’ve got a great view!

Standings.

There were a few motorcycle spectators at MotoGP.

MotoGP at Laguna Seca was an awesome event and I have now I have an idea of how exciting motorcycle races can be.  I’ve now seen maybe car races but I’d never seen Moto so this was a thrilling experience!

What’s your favorite kind of racing??

Sky high

One of my favorite events to watch/shoot at the summer X Games was the Big Air BMX contest.  I unfortunately missed the Big Air Skate contest which I’m sure was just as cool but there was nothing like standing at the top of the Mega Ramp watching these athletes fly so high into the sky.  These are some of my absolute favorite pictures from the weekend.

The lighting and shadows were awesome during practice.

The landing of the big air before the mega ramp.

Helicopters filming as well as all the ground coverage.

I got to shoot some photos from right under these guys behind those Geico signs.  The shots are unreal as you are about to see.  Such a surreal, incredible experience.

The under side of the ramp!

Huge.

Top of the Mega Ramp.

My favorites.

Doubles!

Successful.

The magnitude of the height of these tricks in person is unbelievable.

Dropping!  That has to be the craziest feeling.

Upside down.

Above the crowds.

The riders were all flying.  I saw some MAJOR spills and the sound of the rider hitting the ramp is terrifyingly loud.  Luckily, everyone made it out OK but what a thrill to watch.  Truly a dream come true to stand at the top of the Mega Ramp and watch it all go down 😀

Taking gold was Steve McCann, silver was Zack Warden, and bronze was taken by Kevin Robinson.

This past weekend at the LA Summer X Games the top athletes from all over the world were stepping up to claim medals in a wide variety of events.  I cannot tell you how grateful I was for the chance to snap photos of these events.  I took so many photos and choosing some of my favorite shots was definitely hard to do!  I’m going to share Skateboarding Street Finals first.  These guys were going trick for trick trying to land a run and then stepping it up on the next run.

Clearing the entire picnic table.

Huge.

Chris Cole.

Paul Rodriquez.

Ryan Sheckler.  Crowd favorite for sure.

In the end it came down to Paul Rodriguez and Ryan Sheckler.  P-Rod took the Gold, Sheckler took Silver, and Nyjah Huston took Bronze.  I’ll fill in all of the skaters names tonight when I’m done playing catch up!

Everything is right about getting extreme in the summertime

I had the pleasure of shooting the summer X-games this weekend in LA.  Talk about a dream come true.  I cannot wait to share all of my photos and stories with you this week 😀  Until I upload the DSLR shots, here’s a photo re-cap from my iPhone photos.  Enjoy!

Big Air!

Vert!

Street skate and bmx course.

Rally pits!

Staples Center for Moto!

Finals on Vert

Where all the press conferences were held for all podium athletes.  So interesting to hear them answer any and all questions.

Hot Wheels loop!

BMX Big Air from the top of the ramp side.  Un-real view.  I can’t wait to share these photos.

Skate and BMX bowls.

This was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had as a photographer and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity.  I can’t wait to share all of the photos that I took of these talented athletes!

You don’t need to explain if everything’s changed, just know I’m just like you

I’ve posted a few times about this band because I simply cannot get enough.  Grouplove has been on my musical radar ever since I’ve had the amazing pleasure of seeing them live over a year ago.  Since then, I’ve seen them three times and I can’t wait to see them again.  I was beyond thrilled when they were announced to take the stage at our beloved BFD this year.  Of course I was snapping photos and dancing at the same time.  They might not be technically the best photographs for the music world but I couldn’t resist rocking out to one of my favorites 🙂

Love this dress.  Supposedly, Hannah (pictured above) is from the bay area!

Live105 as always bringing the good stuff.

Happy Friday everybody and have a great weekend!  Make sure you tell your dad that you love them this weekend and celebrate Father’s Day if you can 🙂

Imagine Dragons

This band hasn’t even finished their latest album, Continued Silence, and they are already on fire.  The Las Vegas rockers have made an enormous impact with this EP and are hustling to finish it before they go on tour this fall with AWOLNATION.  Definitely check them out!  Here are some of the photos I snapped of them this past weekend.  It’s almost Friday!

Everyone sings!

Playing around with different focal points.

A man of many talents!

Fans were out in full support, it was so great to see!

I love these shots.

So awesome.  They were so grateful for the turn out and stayed to sign things and take photos with anyone who wanted to meet them.
