22 Dec

Now that my music love has been boldly expressed throughout my blog, I thought I’d throw my 5 favorite albums of the year out since there have been so many out of this world ones released this year!  These albums are not to be missed or overlooked.

The Naked and Famous – Passive Me, Aggressive You

Florence and the Machine – Ceremonials

The Wombats – This Modern Glitch

Grouplove – Never Trust a Happy Song

Foster the People – Torches
You may be over “Pumped Up Kicks” but the rest of the album is wonderful.

All of these albums I can listen to from beginning to end and deserve the nod of top 5 albums of 2011 in my book 🙂

NSSN 2011 – A music lovers mind blowing experience

12 Dec

Friday was the day we’d been preparing for, for months.  Not So Silent Night had arrived and I’d been foaming at the mouth for it for some time.  It’s one of the best concerts of the year held at Oracle Arena in Oakland this year and the line up had me over the moon.  If I were to sum NSSN up in photos, the below photos are the ones I would summarize with.  I have SO many to share but thought I’d start with the overall review of the show.

The doors opened at 5pm and fans started pouring in.

First up was the local band winners, Beta State.  I’d never heard them before but knew in past years the winners were excellent.  The person who picks these bands has the best taste in music and a real talent for hearing up coming sounds.  Beta State did a great job with stage presence.  Usually the band that wins is pretty timid considering they are sharing the stage with some of the most popular names in Alternative music.  They rocked out and had the crowd dancing.

Up next… Young the Giant!  As you know from previous posts, I rather enjoy them live.  They dance across the stage and the lead singer has so much energy you can feel it from anywhere in the building.  They played all of the classics like “Cough Syrup” and “Strings.”  They closed with “My Body” and it was like someone was shaking the building.  Everyone who was at the venue was jumping and singing.

Up next… Bush!  Gavin Rossdale has been taking care of himself and leading the rest of the band, commanded the audiences attention.  Getting started with “Glycerine” was the best thing they could have done.  “Glycerine” has to be one of the most famous Alternative songs of all time and they kept the hits coming.  Bush played every song you’ve ever heard of theirs including their new song “Sound of Winter.”  Towards the end of their set, Gavin got off stage and went singing around the entire arena through the seats and floor singing to fans who were singing along with him.  Bush put on an incredible show and proved to me why they have stayed so prominent in the music industry for so long.

Gahhh!!!!!  Now if you’ve read my blog before you’ve seen my MANY postings about my love for Florence Welch’s music.  My dreams have come true now that I was able to photo her performance and watch her set from less than a foot away.  I’d seen her before so I knew exactly what amazing-ness I was in for.  I’d only seen her acoustic before though so to see her with a full band this time was mind blowing.  She opened with “Only if for a Night” which I couldn’t have loved more for an intro.  It starts so slow and builds throughout the song.  By the end of the first song, her power house voice was dominating and she had a drum beat to back her up.  She was so graceful and beautiful throughout her performance.  They played all my favorites like “Never Let Me Go” and “Heartlines.”  Of course she sang “Dog Days” as well and the crowd ignited.  As Florence ran from side to side of the stage, the crowd couldn’t take their eyes off of her.  It’s incredible that such a large voice comes out of such a delicate woman.  I can’t say enough about her but go see her live, you will understand 🙂

Up next – Mumford and Sons!  Wow… I knew they were amazing live as well but a good band will never put on a bad show.  This is one of those bands that even if they tried couldn’t put on a bad show.  As usual, they had the banjo blazing, horns honking and Marcus Mumford always sings so hard he’s left breathless.  My personal favorite song of theirs is “White Blank Page.”  They played all their hits and some of their new songs which are starting to make their way on the internet (I’ll leak some soon 🙂 ). Mumford was on their A game and they played to successfully leave an ever lasting impression.  It was a huge success.

OH YEAH AND HOW COULD I FORGET…. When Jane’s Addiction had to cancel due to family matters, we called up Green Day and voila!  They showed up in an hours notice…  It was one of the coolest things that I’ve ever seen happen in the bay area’s music history.  Green Day is from the Bay Area and is obviously one of the biggest names in the music industry.  They know how to show their hometown pride and make a stadium of 18,000+ go absolutely nuts.  There was not one person sitting down in the entire arena.  Green Day inspired Florence to jump on stage with them and Mark Zuckerburg to show up just in time to watch from the side of the stage.

This was one of the most incredible concerts and chain of events I have ever seen in my entire musical life.  I think about future shows and wonder, how can this ever be topped?  And to be a part of it and photographing it!  It was a night I’m still not done talking about and I’ll be posting about it for days.  If you were there, you know what an incredible experience it was.

A few good songs for the week

15 Nov

Three songs that I’ve been listening to this week are below.  They are nice soothing songs helping to keep my stress levels down in this very heavy week of work.  Also, two of them are getting me excited for one of my work’s upcoming shows (where did I mention my girl Flo will be there?!?).  Live 105’s Not So Silent Night has been a HUGE part of my life for the last four years.  Not only because I work for the company that creates this event but because they bring some of the largest names in Alternative rock together for one large Christmas time concert.  This year the line-up is rock steady with: Jane’s Addiction, Bush, Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, and Young the Giant (Along with a local artist who wins a battle of the bands type competition).  It’s been an amazing show and you can see some of the past artists and my music photography here (where we have had some of my absolute favorites perform in the past, like Phoenix).   I also threw a little Grace Potter in this week’s mix because her voice in the song below blows me away.  Any way, I ramble on more about that as the time gets closer 🙂  Enjoy for now!

If not now, when??

12 Oct

On Sunday night, Shoreline Amphitheater hosted the Incubus If Not Now, When? tour.  Since I haven’t seen them in 4 years, I was beyond excited to see them again.  I don’t know how to explain my love for them.  I don’t stalk their every move and know every lyric to every song but somehow when their music is on I just feel happy.  I genuinely get a good feeling from listening to their music.  I love that they have a DJ who scratches to some of their songs and that Brandon Boyd is also an avid artist creating books of drawings.  Incubus also tends to put on an interesting show.  When I saw them at the Greek, they used some great lighting to go with the songs they were playing.  They just strike me as an overall creative band and I’m appreciative of that. The new album is also quite good (If Not Now, When?).  The first single from it is “Promises, Promises” that you might have heard spinning on your local radio stations.

I’ll stop jibber jabbering now.  I know I’m a HUGE music geek in case you haven’t been able to tell yet :).

Oh yeah, and did I mention Young the Giant opened?!?  Lucky me!  They sounded great.  In this photo, Mike, from Incubus came out and played “My Body” with them for Young the Giant’s last tour date with Incubus (out of the 25 shows together).  Incubus’s bassist also came out to jam a little.  It was awesome.

Hugging it out before leaving the stage.  These guys you don’t want to miss if they come through your town.  His voice sounded just as good in person as it does on the album.

And then Incubus came out… My pictures aren’t great because I was using my little point and shoot but they give you the general idea of what you’re in for when you go to see this tour.

The little figure shadow is Brandon.  The lights were INCREDIBLE!

More lights.

I like this one because you can see the screen as well with this image from the back.

Sparkle, fire rain… Is that not a real description??

Then they slowed it down for a few songs..

My favorite photo of the night.

They played all of their old hits and 3 or 4 songs from their new album.  It was the perfect mix.  If I could see this show every day for a month straight I would.  If you are any sort of Incubus fan, make sure to go to this tour if you haven’t already.

Alice’s Summerthing 2011

1 Jul

There was an amazing set up for Alice’s Summerthing this past Sunday at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  The weather turned out to be incredible and the park filled up fast with over 20,000 people to create the largest Summerthing turnout to date!  I love working for a company that can make 20,000 people show up and leave feeling like they had the best Sunday they could have had.  Above is a shot of the stage from pretty close up.

The crowd went so far back it was crazy.  As far as you could see there was a huge crowd of people.  There were so many that they trickled onto the hilly sides and even up into the trees!

Here is Parachute performing up close and personal with the crowd.  You might recognize them from previous blog posts as they have come into my work before and did a special lunch time performance for us.  They have such a beautiful sound and a personal show.  They will be going on tour with Michelle Branch and the Goo Goo Dolls soon!

Of course, we are always creating fun times together 🙂  We are missing Rani in this photo though!!  We took this before she got there.

Oh good morning!

Jen and I during Matthew Nathanson, a San Francisco singer songwriter with an amazing voice.

The event was a huge success and Alice 97.3 has an AMAZING team that put on seamless events.  I can’t wait for Now and Zen at the end of summer!
