DIY Outdoor Wire Chandelier

24 Jul

Chels and I were perusing some stores the other day and free people had these amazingly, unexpected chandeliers hanging all over the store.  We started really looking at them and realized they could be easily made.  Since I’ve been working on my outdoor space little by little, I thought this would be a fantastic addition to that area.  I found this chandelier to be the perfect mixture of delicate and interesting.  This DIY is made of things that are subject to change depending on your taste but the staple things I needed were:

Wire (I used jewelry wire because I liked how thin it was)
Hot glue
String or fishing wire to hang
Floral arrangements and/or Beads, Feathers, etc.

I picked these two pieces out of the floral section of the local art store.

I cut the flower heads off of the bundle with about an inch of stem.  I then twisted the wire around the remaining stem and placed hot glue along the stem and wire.  I spread the flowers out evenly.

I then went through and twisted the jewels (which I cut with about 2-3 inches of string so they could dangle at different lengths) in between the flower sections.

The wire started out coiled so I pulled it apart so it was this sort of whimsical twist.

I twisted the two ends of the wire together and hung it from the post of my overhang.

This took maybe 10-15 minutes at most after collecting the pieces to create this outdoor chandelier.  I love it and when the weather starts to turn, I’ll just bring it inside and hang it somewhere inside 🙂

Comment with any questions and I’d be glad to help!

Get happy. Outside!

8 Jun

I thought I’d switch it up a little since it’s Friday.  I’ve had a week full of horse riding and spending time outdoors which inspired me to get this outdoor set up.  I’m inside typically a good chunk of the day at work so on my lunches and after work, I love to be outside.  I have the perfect little stoop to relax on that’s shaded for the weekend mornings or cool evenings.  I wanted to be able to make a space I could enjoy so alas, here’s my new outdoor nook!  I have a few more ideas I want to put into make it this more of an actual outdoor “living” space if you will and I’ll share as I update.

It’s a simple wire set.

I have some greenery around as well 🙂

It’s a simple space that I hope to bring to life over the next couple of weeks so stay tuned!  Also, if you have any fun ideas or patios I’d love to hear/see.  It’s amazing what fresh air can do for you.  I always feel so much better just sitting outside with the sound of the birds and I actually have a very green back yard and side yard.  I’ll have to do a garden post soon.

Have a wonderful weekend!

You want to go to the seaside?

Well make sure you bring a little bit home with you!  Remember when I went to Connecticut with two of my best friends a few weeks ago??  Well I brought a piece of Connecticut home with me 🙂  I collected a bunch of the shells from Milford to bring home with me and have in my house to always remind me.  That beach also had some of the most beautiful shells I’ve ever seen.  I cleaned them up and put them in one of my favorite bowls.  It was an easy way to make my home feel more like a home and remind me of my travels.

I’ve never seen shells this perfect come from a west coast beach!

If you see things that you like while on vacation, bring them back with you to make them part of your home.  Now whenever I see this, I’ll think about my awesome time with my friends and hope that I can have more good memories soon with them!

Vintage Favorites

31 Jan

Lately it’s been some of the older things around my apartment that I find I use and/or cherish the most.  What’s new isn’t always my favorite so here are some of my favorite Vintage pieces you’ll find around my place.

I didn’t even know that my dad was an architectural photographer in his 20’s.  He recently gave me his camera from those days and although I have no idea how to use it, it means a lot to me!  It’s cool to know where my love for photos and architecture come from.

I just love this sugar jar that is a recent edition to my coffee bar!

My old guitar.  This isn’t exactly vintage but it’s been in its case for a while now until recently.  I’ve started to play again and really enjoy it.  I love playing any and everything but some of my favorites to play are Grace Potter and Naked and Famous tunes.

Vintage map tacks my dad also gave me.  I’m working on a DIY project with these at the moment so check back for some cool travel inspiration.  I love the color and the shape of the map tacks. I also love that they symbolize going somewhere.

And last but not least but cookie cutter lid jar that Vicki gave me for Christmas!  I love this idea so much.

The detail is so pretty on this jar.

Favorite Holiday Home and Fashion Trinkets!

16 Nov

Since I will be out of town the week of Thanksgiving, I won’t be at home getting into the holiday cheer.  This is fine by me but since Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, I thought I’d bust out some of my holiday favorites sooner than later.

Red candles!  I’ve replaced my orange and yellow candles now with deep reds for the holidays.

A new green jewelry stand from Forever 21!

It’s perfect for all my different jewelry and I love the matted turquoise!

Red lipstick.  I love red and dark orange hued lipstick.  This one is a Revlon (#018 “Fire”) that I love.  Oh and I also love warm beanies, another plus of winter.

Chunky jewelry!  I love this new Forever 21 necklace (worn above).  I love the dark green beads and gold feathers.

And last but not least… fun nail polish!  Here’s three of my favorites.
(Turquoise – Nordstrom’s $5, Sparkle – Walgreen’s $0.99!, OPI – Beauty Source – on sale for $1.99)  Nail polish is a fun and inexpensive way to add color and/or sparkle to anything.  I love layering sparkles on top of a solid color, too.

These are just small, easy ways to add a little more holiday cheer to your every day life!

Pumpkin Candles

17 Oct

This past weekend my parents had a big family dinner for Ian’s birthday and how lucky we are to have his family as the most special guests in from Michigan and Montana!  This entire weekend has been so incredible and I can’t wait to post about all of the fun things we’ve been up to but the fun hasn’t stopped yet!  My dad and Vicki were also able to come to the dinner which was so great to all be together.   I wish my brother and Liz could have joined, too.  Thankfully we will get to see them when my brother flies back to accept his Distinguished Flying Award through the air force next month.  Anyway, the dinner was great and I give all the credit of this post to my mom and Darrin for making these cute pumpkin candles I am posting about.

They were a fun way to bring Fall to the table!

New Apartment Reveal #1

18 Aug

As some of you may know, I’ve recently moved into my very own place!  It’s has been SO much fun to re-arrange, organize, and decorate the way that I want.  This is my very first place of my own so it’s all a new and exciting experience.  I’ll slowly unveil the new apartment because it’s still a work in progress but the first piece that I’m finally done organizing and satisfied with is my wonderful closet…  it’s made perfectly for all my clothing and hobby accessories!

I made a previous post about the outdoor lights on the sides of my closet because  I really do love this accent.

This is how my closet normally looks when I’m not hiding any disorganization with my folded doors closed 🙂

I frequently change around the middle shelves of my closet depending on what sort of week(s) I’m having.  Although, shoes are the only thing that will always fit no matter what mood you are in 🙂

My closet go esdeep back into both sides so it’s actually as big as the exterior wall you see in both of the first photos.  I like to pick out outfits and hang them on my doors for the next day.  It saves me a good 20 minutes in the morning, I kid you not…

To the backs of each side I keep my hobby things such as all of my horse clothing/boots and snowboarding/winter clothing.  These are also part of the seasonal rotation.

I love the interior lights in my closet.  I think it’s safe to say I’m tad crazy about organizing but I will say it’s a lot more fun when you have such a great closet to do so with!  It’s given me many ideas for when the time comes to build my own house someday.
