What is winter in Southern California?!

17 Jan

One of the first stops Kimmie and I made on my Southern CA excursion was to Huntington Beach.  I was so excited to see Huntington because she used to live there and so did a bunch of our friends, so it was exciting to see their old stomping grounds!  I’ve also never lived on or very near to a beach (I’ve lived close to Lake beaches but not ocean), so it’s fun to get to see the beach towns and people.  This past Saturday was the day we wandered around Huntington and there also happened to be a small surf contest going on but I had so much fun shooting photos from the pier of all the surfers and waves.  I couldn’t believe this was Southern California winter weather.  It was between 65-75 the entire weekend and people were in the water surfing all over the place.  I shot so many photos that I’ve decided to split this post into two.  Here’s the first of two, enjoy!

Ruby’s diner at the end of the Pier, so cute!

I love the way the waves look when they crash from the ocean side view.  So pretty.

So many surfers!

Surf contest.  The contest was on one side of the pier and the other side was for all of the other surfers.

We were literally looking down at the surfers.  It was such a neat and interesting perspective.

Weekend warrior trip = success

The trip down to see my bestie was definitely a success and such a fun time!  She took me all around to see all these places I’ve always wanted to see.  I have SO many photos to share this week and some great stories.  I made it back to San Fran this morning and am getting back in the swing of things before I start my work week tomorrow.  I can’t believe it’s “winter” down there.  The weather was between 65-75 the whole time and just gorgeous.  Happy Holiday Monday!

Friendship Friday

13 Jan

One of my best friends Kimmie and I have been friends now for 8 years.  So crazy to put the amount of time in numbers.  Throughout all the ups and downs that life can bring you, we’ve always stayed present in each others lives and have been there for each other through it all.  I was surprised by this three day weekend after the holidays and when I realized that Kimmie was only a flight away, I thought Carpe Diem.  I booked a flight to Southern California where her and I will spend a weekend catching up on life, love and friendship.  She’s a fantastic videographer and we plan lots of nerd photo/video dates 🙂  Next week I will have tons to share on the southern parts of California.  Until then, I’m off again.  Everyone have a WONDERFUL weekend and I hope you all do something that you’ll never forget.  Also, I’ll leave you with some good traveling songs.

I’ve always loved this music video.

Enjoy and Happy Friday!

Somewhere only we know

12 Jan

Lately I’ve been busier than I could even explain.  It’s a great thing but I always need to make the time for getting out to the barn because it’s a place that I feel like only me and Spot can appreciate in the moment.  I absolutely adore him.  I find that on weekends when the sun is out, I love taking him on adventures out of the regular indoor arena that we ride in on dark week nights because it’s lit.  He loves every bit of the attention and he works so hard in every training session we have.  I know it may sound cheesy but it’s really true what people say, there is nothing like the bond between a girl and her horse 🙂  Being at the barn brings my sanity and calm attitude back.  Right before I was about the leave the sun started setting and I snapped some more photos of my haven.  What’s yours??

A place to see it all

11 Jan

This past weekend I went into the city to see my friends and go on a mini-adventure.  My friends, Lacey and Shannon, took me up to Twin Peaks to fully experience a beautiful San Francisco sunset and it was one of the most beautiful views of San Francisco I’ve ever seen.  Here’s my photo review of Twin Peaks’ gorgeous panoramic look out.

Full moon!

Golden Gate Bridge.

Bay Bridge ❤

Lacey and Shannon taking it all in.

This bird was just hovering taking it all in, too 🙂

Care for coffee?

10 Jan

OK, so remember how I quit coffee?  That’s completely over.  Ha!  I just love it too much to give it up and you know what?  I’m not a crazy addict, I only have one a day BUT my new Keurig has changed my life.  My wonderful mom and stepdad got me a mini-keurig for Christmas and it has been one of the best things I have ever had.  It’s even allowed me to create a coffee bar in my little kitchen 🙂  Here’s a way that I turned a small space into a cozy coffee corner!

I took over a small area of my limited counter space to allow for my precious Keurig 🙂

It makes one perfect cup every morning.

Oh yeah, and the flavors are endless!  My personal favorite is Chai.

It was so simple to create my own mini coffee bar, yet has made me love the used to be dark corner of my kitchenette.  It’s also saved me money from going and buying coffee.  It’s a win-win situation and I highly recommend adding a coffee bar to your house if you like coffee.

It’s the little things in life, right?

The line up is here!

I will NOT miss this year.  Mission: Music, Photos, Friends.

Winter Wonderland – the magic of snow!

9 Jan

While other snow areas in the country are hurting for snow, I got spoiled in Michigan enjoying a nice storm.  Here are the last of my photos from my trip!

Perfect snowflakes.

There’s something about those mid-west skies…

Road trip.

Pit stop at Lambeau Field!

They had to de-ice the plane before leaving.  Not very comforting!

Heading back west.

I had such a wonderful time in MI.  It’s a very beautiful place and if you ever get the chance to visit Marquette, don’t pass it up.

Happy Monday and Enjoy 🙂

Pet Portrait Bloopers!

6 Jan

While I was in Michigan, I wanted to practice my pet portrait skills because that is an area of photography that draws me in.  I’d love to do pet portraits for people.  Duke, Ian’s family’s dog, was the perfect animal to practice with.  He’s so full of energy and so proud looking.  I took him out in the snow to try to hone my skills and I came out with some strong photos and some really funny photos.  I thought I’d share the funny ones today on this Friday to start the weekend off with a smile 🙂

This is just classic.

This dog is the happiest animal when you take him outside.  He will snuggle with you all day inside but suit up to go outside and it’s like somebody gave him a red bull!

Eating snow 🙂

Superman jump!

Trying to taunt me into coming to fetch the stick.

What fun it is to be outside watching this dog run free.  I’ll post the other photos of him, the non-bloopers, next week.

Enjoy and Happy Friday!

The most beautiful site the storm brought to me

4 Jan

Once Ian and I had gotten snowed in and grounded from flying, Ian’s mom Frida was so kind to find a way to make it possible for me to see horses in the snow which has been a long time wish of mine.  It was such a great experience seeing the horses outside in the snow running free.  I thought they might be cold in the snow but they looked as content as ever with even a small snow blanket on.  This is something I wish every animal lover could see in person.  Frida got me a horse photography book for Christmas and I was in love with a photo in the book of this one horse in the snow.  Little did I know I’d get my own chance to practice shooting one of my favorite subjects in the entire world in one of the most beautiful settings – snow!  My fingers were cold from shooting but it was beyond worth it!

Frida’s friend’s who owned the farm were nice enough to let us come out and check out their barns/horses.  One of them, Jason, gave us a wonderful tour and introduced us to all of the animals around the barn.  How lucky they are to live on this amazing farm.  They work very hard to keep it as beautiful as it is.

There’s always barn cats around and their barn cats were friendlier than ever.

This horse, Trigger, was a breed I’d never heard of before, a Colorado Mountain horse.  He was so beautiful.

Frida up close and personal with one of the horses 🙂

Then we met Daisy, the mini horse of a lifetime.  Such a cute mini!

Daisy and one of the barn cats.

Ian letting the horses smell him.  Always the best thing to do when first meeting a horse.

Sweet Daisy.

Beautiful.

This horse was a rescue.  He was very happy in his pasture with the snow coming down.

I just loved the colors and setting of this photo.

It was such a wonderful experience to go out and see these horses in the snow.  I was so thankful to Frida for taking me out there, Jason for showing us around, and Ian for being a champ in the freezing with a cold.  I can’t wait to go back next time I’m there and see these beautiful horses again.  I have so many more wonderful Michigan snow pictures from my trip that I can’t wait to post throughout this week and next.

Enjoy!
